Monday night our FHE group went to the MOA. It was such a fun activity! I love museums, art museums in particular. We had our own special docent (guide), my friend and FHE brother, Spencer. He is studying humanities and is such an art guru. They have a couple different exhibits, but we went to the newest one, Dan Steinhilber. He is a found object artist, which means his works are sometimes misunderstood/unappriciated by those who think that it is ridiculous or impossibly easy. His works may be easy to create, but the creativity of his works can not be duplicated. I love that he is able to really make something like duck sauce become a piece of art. It was a giant wall of duck sauce placed on, in an almost straight line. Showing the artists hand, although for this piece, he did not place the duck sauce, students in the art program did. It raises the question of who the artist really is, the one with the idea or the one who made the piece? I don't know if I have a good answer, but I think a lot of it lies with the artist's idea. It would be wonderful if they made the piece, giving it more depth and ownership, but the idea has to come from someone, and if that's the artists, than they need credit for that. He had so many really wonderful pieces. One in particular I loved was a inkjet photograph of a shattered light bulb. It looks so etheral. He smashed a flourescent light bulb on a trash bag. It is so simple, but looks so beautiful, white on black. He used many trash bags for his exhibit and made them into something more beautiful than trash. How cool is that, a simple object can look so remarkable. I think I'll be doing more brainstorming about what other simple objects I can photograph!
Thinking of simplicity and beauty, I received another call from Marc this week. He gave me specifics on what I am to do while we are in Haiti, in just about two weeks!! I can't believe it! I am doing all the photography and all of it is being used in on the IASK website. I am also going to be mentoring with IASK's current PR person for a couple hours a month. I have been wanting to do something that combines my photography experience with some awareness/non-profit work and this is so perfect. I am feeling busy, but so excited about the opportunity I have. One last excitement. I think I've found an apartment! A house actually. It is a really cute place that is down the street from where I live now. For some reason I love our neighborhood. My own little small town within the big metropolis of Provo! :) Marc and Paka own it and I am going to look at it this weekend, even though I have seen it before. It has an upstairs and downstairs with washer/dryer and internet (woot, woot!) and it has one private room. The one thing it doesn't have that would be nice, is covered parking...but that I can handle, so I think it'll be the one!
